How to Manage Templates (Categories)

Product Templates are an easy way to streamline the inventory process and keep it consistent. Templates can be used to categorize products using specifications such as size, weight, tax settings, custom fields, and which labels should print.

How to create and manage Templates

1. Navigate to the Templates Page

In the Manage portal, go to Settings and then Templates.

2. Add a new Template or edit an existing one

To create a Template, click Add Template at the top right of your portal.

To update an existing Template, select it from the Template list located under the search bar.

Use the search bar to locate a Template by name. Templates can be sorted by:

  • Template Name: A–Z or Z–A

  • Category: A–Z or Z–A

3. Enter the Basic Template Details

Within each Template there are many specifications that you can input:

  • Name: The name used to identify the Template in ConsignR.

  • Category: The Product category associated with the Template, such as Sneakers, Clothing, Accessories, or Collectibles.

  • Description Template: Generic reusable product-description content.

  • Weight: Enter the default weight of the Product in pounds.

In order to save your template you must have at least one Option and the Name, Category, and Weight fields must be filled.

4. Configure the Template Options

Template options are an easy way to distinguish one inventory variant from another.

Templates can contain up to three product options. Each option requires an Option Name and at least one Option Value.

To add a value, type it into the Option Values field and press Enter.

By clicking Add Option you are able to to add another option to the same Template.

Tips:

  • If you're having trouble coming up with option names some common examples include size or condition.

  • You can drag the values to rearrange their order.

  • Duplicate values cannot be added to the same option.

  • At least one option must be on the Template in order to save it.

5. Configure Barcode and Tax Settings

Choose the settings that should apply to products and items using the Template. There are a couple different options for Barcode and Tax Settings:

  • Show location on barcode: Displays the item’s inventory location on its barcode label.

  • Show price on barcode: Displays the item’s price on its barcode label.

  • Charge tax: Marks products using the template as taxable.

  • Tax Threshold: If Charge Tax is enabled, use this field to configure the minimum price at which tax should apply.

6. Assign Product and Item Label Templates

Use the Product and Item Label Template fields to choose which layouts should print for products and items using this Product Template.

Product Label Templates: Used when printing product-level labels.

Item Label Templates: Used when printing individual inventory-item labels.

Tip: Product Templates and Custom Label Templates are different. Product Templates as mentioned above specifically control product and inventory configuration, while Custom Label Templates control the design and content of printed labels. Custom Label Templates can be managed in Settings under Custom Labels.

7. Saving the Template

Review the Template settings, then click Save Template.

If the template does not save, confirm that:

  • A Name has been entered.

  • A Category has been entered.

  • A Weight has been entered.

  • At least one Option has been added.

  • Every Option has a name and at least one value.

  • No duplicate Option Values have been entered.

After updating an existing Template, active inventory will be synchronized with connected sales channels in the background. Make sure to allow some time for those updates to appear.

8. Removing a Template

Select Remove from the Template’s action menu by clicking the three dots on any already created Template.

Removing a Template is permanent. ConsignR does not currently provide an archive or restore option for Product Templates.

Final Tips:

  • Changing template options will affect every inventory item using the template.

  • ConsignR displays a confirmation before removing a saved option as these can't be undone.

  • You can duplicate a template from the template’s action menu or detail page. Any settings changed on the copy are exclusive and the original template will not be changed.

  • Use consistent names that clearly identify the category and sizing system, such as “Sneakers – Men’s” or “Clothing – Women’s.”

  • Duplicate before making major changes you aren't sure about as you can modify the copy while leaving the original unchanged.
